A children’s eye health campaign in the Republic of Ireland has resulted in 100 independent optical practices agreeing to provide free eye tests for a month.
Members of the EyeZone group committed to offering a free six-point vision test to children aged 12-16 throughout May, describing the current situation as ‘unacceptable’.
EyeZone manager Ray Bissett said: ‘Member opticians are putting their words into action by offering the test. We are hopeful that this will provide much needed support for children.’
In Ireland, children up to the age of 12 receive eye tests through the School Medical Scheme. After this, some receive care if their parents have a medical card. At 16 those with cards are eligible for adult services.
