At the time of going to press, 80 per cent of respondents to an online poll on opticianonline.net claimed not to have received their GOS contract.

The lack of communication from PCTs has left many practitioners concerned about the consequences of failing to return their contracts in time.

'I haven't got a clue when the deadline to return my contract is,' said Kyriacos Adamou of Cox Opticians in Birmingham. 'I have no information and I don't want to get into trouble.'
