Profession responds to white paper omissions

Inclusion of the goal of ‘reducing avoidable sight loss through regular sight testing and access’ in the Public Health Outcomes Framework has been requested by the optical bodies in an open letter to the secretary of state for health.

lansleySigned by the chief executives of the College of Optometrists, the Optical Confederation and the Royal National Institute of Blind People, the letter to Andrew Lansley voices concern that two recent white papers address neither eye health nor sight loss needs.

As a result of the omission from Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS and Healthy Lives, Healthy People (News 21.01.11) the bodies requested a meeting with Lansley or the public health minister, Anne Milton, to discuss the ‘importance of bringing eye health within the public health agenda’.
