As part of a collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University, British industrial designer Fripp Design and Research has used 3D printing technology to produce prosthetic eyes.
According to reports in design and architecture magazine Deezen, the prosthetic eyes can be produced up to 97 per cent cheaper than existing handmade versions and at a rate of up to 150 eyes per hour.
The eyes are printed in powder with full colour before being covered in resin. The technology allows intricate coloured details including the iris and blood vessels.
‘Because each eye is produced from the same system the consistency is the same and the cost is drastically reduced to approximately £100,’ said a company spokesperson.
