Public health must come first

I would like to comment on Jerry Read's concerns (News, January 19) that tightening the rules governing the distribution of plano lenses would cause the wholesalers financial hardship.

Is he really expressing sympathy for Fashion Wear Services which sells its cosmetic lenses in body piercing parlours, hairdressers, fashion stores and most recently the Gadget Shop? I would have thought his priority where contact lenses are concerned was to protect and serve the British public and its ocular health. Since when did it become part of the Department of Health's brief to protect rogue traders exploiting defective legislation? If plano lenses were defined in the Opticians Act similarly to prescription lenses, Fashion Wear Services' distribution policy would be illegal. Nick Coleman Chrome-X, Hampshire
