A panel of leading figures in UK optics last week faced questions from an invited audience at The Vision Care Institute. Rory Brogan reports

The sorry state of children's screening, concerns about optometric salaries and the question of training needs were all aired at Johnson & Johnson's Question Time, hosted last week by newsreader John Suchet at The Vision Care Institute (TVCI).

The panel for the event, available as a live webcast, comprised professional body chiefs Bob Hughes, Bryony Pawinska and David Hewlett, along with Ian Davies, vice president EMEA of TVCI and Professor David Thomson of City University.

While the discussion began with agreement that the professional bodies were now working together much more successfully, it was a question on children's screening that brought the most forthright responses. Luca Conte, Transitions business manager UK & Ireland, asked who out of schools, parents or government should be responsible for ensuring all children have, at the very least, visual screening in schools.
