Recruitment service launches for independents

Optical careers specialist Gemma Drake launched a service providing support to small-to-medium sized optical businesses with pipeline talent management, called Into Optics.

The members’ subscription programme offered practices help in navigating recruitment challenges in the local optical industry and a solution to connect businesses with their future workforce.

Drake has experience working with young people to get them started on their careers before specialising in optometry and later working with Specsavers and the College of Optometrists.

She said the UK faced a shortage of skilled professionals in science, technology, engineering and maths, which posed a threat to professions such as optometry.

‘Local optical practices play a vital role in our communities and high streets. As users, we’re also incredibly lucky to have access to specialist, community-based eye health services right on our doorstep.

‘Into Optics aims to protect and nurture these businesses by supporting them to connect with their future talent. Independents are incredibly well placed to offer students a unique training experience and our aim is to inspire local young people to consider a fulfilling career with them,’ Drake said.

Drake added that multiples were investing in opportunities for future generations and benefiting from connections with universities.

She highlighted that independents, particularly in rural and coastal locations, were being left behind but Drake aimed to level the playing field with Into Optics.
