Regulation for plano lenses on the cards early next year

Legislation to regulate the supply of plano contact lenses is unlikely before the New Year. The General Optical Council set out to amend the Opticians Act 1989 last year, with the aim of limiting sales to registered opticians. Efforts to tighten sales

Meanwhile, the GOC standards committee has viewed the delay of guidance for the re-use of trial contact lenses as ÔunacceptableÕ. Research funded by the GOC, together with ABDO, the AOP, FODO and the College of Optometrists, has been placed before the DoH for final approval, but the Department has continued to reserve its position.
The GOC committee noted that the College of Optometrists had taken legal advice regarding the release of approved guidance to the profession. It concluded that the GOC must work with the College to consider whether to recommend the guidance to the DoH to form the basis for best practice in this area.
