An investigation by consumer watchdog Which? has found failings within the optical profession to provide thorough eye examinations and accurate prescriptions.

Mystery shoppers found patients with the greatest need were, on average, receiving the worst service, and saw little difference between overall service at multiple and independent practices.

'We're concerned that some opticians may be doing the minimum because it doesn't pay to be thorough,' said Joanna Pearl, Which? health expert.

In sending Optician its findings, a spokesperson for Which? said it was keen to work with the profession 'to try and resolve the problems we found, rather than just be seen to give opticians a hard time'.
