Her Majesty is patron to Moorfields and her visit will mark the official opening of the international facility for children's eye care, treatment and research.

Ian Balmer, chief executive, said: 'We are privileged that Her Majesty will be officially opening our new world-class facility. It will be an extremely proud day in the history of Moorfields and a testament to the tremendous work by everyone over the past six years to turn the concept into reality.'

Her Majesty will meet patients, staff and key donors.

The centre is named after the owner of Express Newspapers, Richard Desmond, a former patient of Moorfields who donated £2.5m to the appeal.

The seven-floor Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre cost £15.5m and houses the largest paediatric ophthalmic clinical, research and training centre in the world.
