D&A had committed £75,000 but thanks to efforts of staff, a further £105,000 was raised through sponsored activities. The extra money means the hospital can provide two new play areas and it is hoped that the final sum will be £200,000.

Ferguson said: 'We are delighted our fundraising campaign has been so successful and with the help of our branches nationwide we have more than doubled the original amount pledged.'

Moorfields Eye Hospital chief executive Ian Balmer (left) was grateful to D&A employees and said it was an incredible achievement that would benefit patients for years to come.
