The RNIB is calling on eye care professionals, pharmaceutical companies and patient organisations to form a UK-wide alliance to improve glaucoma detection and overcome the barriers to effective treatment.
This follows the report Don't blame the patient! which revealed that thousands of people with glaucoma are losing their sight by not taking their medication. The RNIB added that 200,000 people in the UK have needlessly lost their sight to glaucoma.
Barbara McLaughlan, RNIB campaigns manager said: 'Nobody in the UK should be losing their sight to glaucoma any more. Yet sadly people continue to and often it's because patients have no symptoms and so simply stop taking the drops.'
