A ‘groundbreaking’ framework and set of guidelines were introduced by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to help low vision clinics provide best practice care.
The guidelines, developed in collaboration with blind, partially sighted people and optometry specialists, were unveiled at the charity’s state of the art Low Vision Centre in London on February 21.
RNIB also created training resources for staff and established referral routes from optometry to enhance the overall patient experience and advise eye care professionals on how best to support them.
Louise Gow, RNIB’s clinical lead for eye health, optometry and low vision services, said: ‘We’re excited to introduce this pioneering Low Vision Framework, which represents a significant step towards a more inclusive and patient-centred approach in low vision care and encourage optometrists to use the guidance and sign up for the e-learning resources.’
