Singer Robbie Williams revealed on social media that he was behind the winning bid of £20,000 for the spectacles and pipe that belonged to comedian Eric Morecambe.
Williams told followers that he treated himself to a present for all the promotion he had done for his new film and with his birthday coming up.
Williams said he cried ‘happy childlike tears’ when he won: ‘You see, I guess we all need friends-we-never-meet from off the telly. Eric has always been mine. An uncle of sorts.
‘To the very core of me, Eric Morecambe’s spirit has been salve for my soul. How Eric made me feel is how I want to make people feel.’
The Eric Morecambe Collection Auction took place over two days at the Burton Albion Pirelli Stadium in January and featured memorabilia from the comedian’s career.
Auction house Hanson Auctioneers said the event drew a record-breaking crowd and Morecambe’s frames surpassed the £2,000-4,000 estimate with Williams’ £20,000 winning bid online.
‘Their sale highlighted the enduring popularity of Eric’s legacy, as well as the emotional and nostalgic value that such personal items hold for his legions of fans,’ the auction house said.
