Cataract surgery could be performed by a fully robotic surgical platform and potentially increase access to ophthalmic surgery worldwide after $55m was raised to develop ForSight Robotic’s Oryom device.
ForSight said Oryom was used successfully by a number of ophthalmic surgeons in multiple cataract procedures on an animal eye model.
Dr Daniel Glozman, CEO and co-founder of ForSight, commented: ‘Our goal is to democratise this highly sophisticated procedure, enabling patients around the world to easily access the treatment that can restore their vision.’
Funding will be used to further develop the platform in clinical trials and the company is also exploring ways of using robotics for retinal diseases and glaucoma.
