He will stand down on February 10 but has been asked by Rodenstock to stay on as a non-executive director. The name of Hunt's successor has yet to be announced.

Since establishing the British subsidiary of the German optical giant 19 years ago, Hunt said Rodenstock had enjoyed phenomenal growth.

One of Hunt's major achievements has been the Rodenstock Club founded in 1989. This is a grouping of practitioners through which Rodenstock markets its lens and frame products. Hunt chose the Rodenstock Club's annual luncheon and award ceremony to announce his retirement and pay tribute to the Club concept.

He said many of the concepts currently being promoted by other manufacturers to bolster the independent sector were things the Rodenstock Club had been doing for years.
