Recent recommendations to improve labelling of contact lens care products and introduce universal lens care guidelines could signal the end of 'no rub' labels on solution packaging if advice to the US Food and Drug Administration is adopted worldwide.
Proposals made at a meeting of the agency's panel held on June 10 were triggered by solution recalls in recent years by Advanced Medical Optics and Bausch & Lomb.
The meeting was convened to discuss general issues concerning the 'post-market experience' with various contact lens care products. The FDA is now expected to adopt the recommendations.
According to BCLA education consultant Caroline Christie, the main outcome of the meeting from the practitioner point of view is the likely requirement for 'rub and rinse' instructions to be included in directions for use.
