Safety of contact lenses supported after plastic study

Euromcontact highlighted the European Union’s extensive regulations regarding medical devices after US research identified that some soft contact lenses contain per- and polyfluroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The body noted in a statement how the quality and safety of contact lenses were safeguarded by the rigorous processes contact lenses must go through before being sold.

‘Contact lenses have for decades demonstrated to be a safe and reliable option for vision correction, providing millions of people worldwide with clear and comfortable sight,’ Euromcontact said.

Testing was commissioned by Mamavation and Environmental Health News, which found high levels organic fluorine, a marker of PFAS, in lenses made by Acuvue, Alcon and CooperVision in the US.

PFAS do not naturally break down and have been linked to various health conditions, including cancer, foetal complications and kidney disease. However, the report noted the health impacts of PFAS exposure via the eyes were unclear.
