Sainsbury's has stopped selling contact lenses and has closed its contact lens website www.sainsburyscontactlenses.co.uk.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson told Optician that it stopped selling contact lenses online in April 'as part of a wide ranging review' which was conducted prior to the launch of a more extensive online non-food offer later this year.
The spokesperson said the review was still ongoing and added that it was too early to answer questions as to whether the supermarket chain intends to sell contact lenses again or other optical products such as frames.
The supermarket retailer launched its contact lens offer in March 2006 amid claims that it could provide daily and monthly lenses for up to 40 per cent cheaper than opticians' high street prices. At the time, in conjunction with Dollond & Aitchison, Sainsbury's sold lenses online from Bausch & Lomb, CIBA Vision, CooperVision and Johnson & Johnson, offering free delivery across the UK.
