The importance of examining children's eyes at a young age has been highlighted by a Preston primary school.
Moor Nook Primary enlisted a local optometrist as part of an initiative to improve services and found that 43 per cent of the pupils that were tested needed vision correction.
The head teacher approached Preston PCT after noticing that many difficulties experienced by pupils at the school were due to problems with their vision.
The PCT optometric adviser and head of primary care contracts drew up a plan, invited applications from local opticians and subsequently appointed Blackburn-based optometrist Mynisha Patel.
