The children, aged between seven and 13, are sufferers of the after-effects of the 1986 nuclear explosion in Chernobyl and are visiting the UK for some much needed healthcare and a break from the hardships of life in the Soviet region.

During their visit the children received thorough eye tests using the 'latest technology' and were given free spectacles if required.

'These children are still suffering from the disaster's legacy,' said Scrivens marketing director Andrea Callaway. 'In addition to the high levels of ill health affecting many people living in the region, particularly thyroid cancer, there is a critically low level of optical and medical care. We hope the optical care we were able to offer them has helped to improve their quality of life,' she said.
