A city-centre multiple was damaged when a burst pipe flooded a basement testing room. Staff at Specsavers Opticians in Peterborough's Bridge Street watched in horror as water forced paving up outside their premises, then barricaded themselves in the practice as shoppers attempted to negotiate the torrent. Local paper The Evening Telegraph (October 21) reported that 'flood defences' of cardboard and towels were not enough to prevent the water flowing under the front door.
, and staff arrived the next day to water in the downstairs area. Specsavers' Hayley Eason told the paper: 'Luckily we had unplugged everything. We were able to get out through a back entrance, but some of us had problems getting home because the Car Haven car park was flooded.' Anglian Water reported that the flood was due to a ruptured water main from a large pipe Ð 'a foot across' Ð and a repair team had worked through the night to repair it.
