Sightsavers in charity drive

Landrover

A refurbished Land Rover has set off for Liberia packed with ophthalmic equipment donated to sight-loss charity Sightsavers.

The vehicle was restored by young offenders in the Midlands as part of Birmingham City Council's Vehicles For Vision project. It was the sixth Land Rover made roadworthy by the initiative, which has taken on 5,000 teenagers involved in the criminal justice system since forming 11 years ago.

Parts and tools for the repair work were donated by Land Rover. Once working, the vehicles are used by local healthcare staff for patient visits, hospital transportation and school screenings. Previous dispatches have reached Sierra Leone, Haiti and Uganda.
