The London-based Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers has launched the prize and hopes to present 'the Spectacle Makers' Trophy' at Optrafair 2001. An SMC spokesman for the award said its focus would be on innovations 'in the optical field that will enhance the provision of ophthalmic services to the public'. The award would be made annually, the spokesman said, and entries were open to innovations introduced during the preceding calendar year. 'It is hoped that the award will attract entries from the widest possible sphere,' the SMC spokesman said, 'embracing all sectors in the provision of eye care and eyewear. Entries may comprise a service, a technique or a product, and may come from an individual, a company or other organisation.' The cash awards are a &\#163;1,000 first prize, a &\#163;400 second prize and a &\#163;200 third prize. Entry forms are available from the clerk at the SMC.
