Online retailer SelectSpecs.com claims to offer the cheapest spectacles online at £8.50 delivered.
The price includes full rimmed single-vision prescription frames with UV protection, a scratch-resistant coating and anti-reflection treatment. The site maintains that its prices undercut its nearest competitor, GlassesDirect by £30.25 on the prices of a frame, prescription lenses and both coatings. It also claims that Specsavers' cheapest price for the same service is £67.
SelectSpecs gives consumers a choice of eight pairs of spectacles at this entry level price, but also sells designer frames and brand-name sunglasses including Ray-Ban, Prada, Armani. Ferrari and Serengeti.
Jamie Murray Wells told Optician: 'SelectSpecs are one of quite a few websites that followed us into the market. They seem to be doing reasonably well at the value end of the market, but value is just one of the competencies we offer.'
