Specsavers denies laser surgery report

Optical multiple Specsavers Opticians has denied a national newspaper report that it will conduct laser surgery and cataract operations by the end of this year.

The report, published in The Sun newspaper on Monday (May 1) claimed a source at the group had said the decision was 'a natural move' for the group and was being made so that Specsavers can offer the public spectacles or corrective eye surgery 'depending on their wishes'. It also claimed Vision Express and Boots would follow suit. However, by Tuesday Specsavers had issued a complete denial of the story. A spokeswoman said: 'This is completely untrue. We're not sure where they got this from but we're trying to find out. 'While Specsavers Opticians is always interested in proactively exploring new opportunities in eye care we have no plans to open corrective eye surgery clinics.' A spokeswoman for Boots Opticians also said the company did not have any plans to enter into laser surgery. 'This is speculation. It's obviously someone putting two and two together,' she said. 'In common with any company, when you're in a market you look about you and see what may be coming around the corner. But we have no plans in this direction.'
