Optical chain Specsavers has backed its delivery of DVLA screening services by saying it had invested in hundreds of stores to provide the approved service together with subcontractors.

In past months some in the profession have asked how patients living 25 miles from a service would be screened where the chain was not present.

In response, a Specsavers spokesperson told Optician it was providing Group 1 tests within 25 miles and Group 2 within 50 miles of people's homes, carried out by Specsavers where possible, but there had been areas where non-Specsavers optical practices stepped in under subcontracts.

Overall, 16,500 DVLA-approved tests has been provided to date since the contract was awarded in March, with the multiple investing approximately £1m in new equipment and facilities. There were presently 361 Specsavers capable of providing DVLA-approved sight tests, with 15 to follow by the end of the year.
