Children who wear spectacles are being bullied at school, to the extent that some play truant to avoid playground taunts, new research has revealed.

The study was commissioned by Specsavers to mark the inaugural National Glasses Day which takes place today (September 19).

The findings suggest that a quarter of children are upset when told they have to wear spectacles, despite fashionable role models such as Johnny Depp and David Tennant.

The survey of 1,000 children and their parents also revealed that almost half of children who wear spectacles are called names such as 'speccy four eyes' in the playground and that 60 per cent of children don't think glasses are 'cool'. Nearly 50 per cent don't wear their spectacles when they should because of peer pressure.
