In an exclusive report, Alex Thomas reveals the findings of an Optisoft survey looking at how independents are using IT to enhance all aspects of their business

The overriding message from the just released Optisoft IT survey is that technology is fast moving away from solely being used in the reception area, for tasks such as patient recalls, to becoming an essential tool throughout the practice, including the consulting room.

Of the 423 respondents to the survey, 12 per cent came from the Midlands, with the same figure from the North-East, while 11 per cent were based in East Anglia and 10 per cent in London. The rest were evenly spread across the country, giving a balanced portrayal of the views of UK practices.

Staff training

Staff training was found to be the main area for investment in practices, followed by diagnostic technology, with an effective IT system in third place. New shopfitting was the fourth main reason for investment, followed by local press advertising and PR and then local team sport sponsorship.
