Trustees of the Irvine Aitchison Memorial fund received a record number of applications for two funded places on a Vision Aid Overseas group visit to Africa.
They stated that after considerable assessment difficulty, they invited seven second-year optometry students from City University, Cardiff University, Glasgow Caledonian, UMIST and Bradford University to an expenses-paid interview in London last month.
'With even greater difficulty, due to the high quality of the applicants, the two places available were offered to and have been accepted by Janaka Sasitharan from City and Ciara Hankins from Cardiff.'
After obligatory attendance at a training day in the spring, both students will be supporting a two-week VAO project to Africa next summer.
