Study links DED therapy to reduced migraine severity

A study involving 24 participants with both migraine and dry eye disease (DED) has found that managing DED symptoms reduced migraine severity.

Participants received either Systane Hydration UD (Alcon, Fort Worth TX) or saline eye drops (NeilMed, Santa Rosa, CA) four times daily for 4 weeks, with a 2-week washout period between treatments.

Both migraine severity and DED symptoms were assessed both at baseline and after each treatment period.

The findings indicated that ocular lubrication was significantly associated with a reduction in both migraine severity and dry eye symptoms.

The study concluded that, in patients with coexisting migraine and dry eye, effectively treating DED reduced migraine severity.
