As reported in last week's Optician, (News, August 15), having come to the end of its formative period, the Central Support Unit was created to help LOCs meet the challenges of local contracting for enhanced services, such as negotiating with PCTs over enhanced services contracts.
To further this aim it has developed a new corporate strategy to give LOC members better access to opportunities to provide enhanced services.
The unit is run by a board of directors with two from each of ABDO, the AOP and FODO, three directors elected by LOCs and observers from each of the College of Optometrists and the LOC Central Fund. The board is chaired by Alan Tinger, a chartered accountant and former managing director of Galaxy Optical services (suppliers and consultants to Tesco Opticians). Georgina Gordon, the full-time head of unit has a background in NHS management, in particular commissioning.
