Most eye care professionals have the appetite to take on more training to further their career, latest findings suggest.
According to the Optician Workplace Survey 2013, around 40 per cent of optometrists had considered or already undertaken some training to provide enhanced services, such as low vision and glaucoma clinics.
Twenty-one per cent of them had trained in or were interested in independent prescribing.
There was a strong interest among both optical assistants and optical technicians to qualify as dispensing opticians.
The research, sponsored by Specsavers, found that 53 per cent of optical assistants, and 30 per cent of optical technicians, were keen to train as DOs. This compared to the 10 per cent of optical assistants and 7 per cent of optical technicians who would like to become optometrists.
