The Careers in Optics working group won an 'innovation in recruitment' award at the Recruiter Awards for Excellence 2011 at London's Gloucester House Hotel.
The group was set up in 2010 to raise awareness of optics as a career choice in schools and sixth-form colleges (News 10.12.11). It was created to stimulate further interest in the profession and to target regions where recruitment challenges exist. The judges agreed that the campaign showed 'real innovation, technology and investment in the grass roots, with the long-term plan of attracting future recruits into the industry a real step forward'. Professor David Thomson, group chairman said: 'To attract the very best young people into optometry and optics we needed a fresh approach which would capture the imaginations of students at a time when they are thinking about their career.'
