Computerised test chart developer Thomson Software Solutions has launched Acuity Master, a new system for measuring, recording and analysing visual acuity.

The system uses a touch sensitive laptop and a large format LED monitor to display the chart. The system was said to be simple to operate and automatically manages the test protocol and scoring, following efficient and fully validated algorithms.

Results may be saved in the integrated database or exported via the API to other databases or record systems. A variety of reports are generated so that changes in visual acuity can be monitored over time.

The system can measure visual acuities in the range -0.4 to 1.6 and incorporates ETDRS, British, Tumbling E, Landolt C, Kay and Lea optotypes. It also includes a low contrast acuity test, a number plate test and a range of image slides for educating and entertaining patients.

Developer Professor Thomson said: ‘Our computerised test charts are in use in over 6,000 consulting rooms in the UK including most of the major eye hospitals. Acuity Master was developed in response to requests from clinics where the main requirement is the efficient and accurate assessment of visual acuity. We believe that this system will significantly improve the quality of visual acuity testing in these settings.’
