Tom Davies designs frames for Disney's Cruella film

Tom Davies created 120 frames for the new Disney film

Actors Emma Stone and Emma Thompson will wear frames designed by Tom Davies in Disney’s Cruella film, which will be released on May 28.

The British eyewear designer created frames for the fashionable and villainous characters, Cruella de Vil and The Baroness, as well as the wider cast of the film.

Davies said he was initially asked to design frames just for the Baroness but noticed while researching the period in which the film was set that almost everyone wore glasses.

He worked with the film’s costume designer, Jenny Beavan, to make 120 frames with multiple pairs created to track Stone’s character development from Estella to Cruella.

Davies said: ‘I absolutely loved the challenge of working on Cruella, especially as I found myself on a roller coaster eyewear bonanza of making glasses for everyone. I’ve only myself to blame as I wanted the film to look as authentic as possible and glasses were ubiquitous in 1970s London. It was such an honour to work with the legendary Jenny Beavan and the brilliant production team. I can’t wait to see the film and all my frames up on-screen.’

Davies explained that bespoke frames usually take up to four weeks to make but tight deadlines meant he made models himself and delivered them hours after the fittings.

He used an old-fashioned acetate press to handmake the raw materials in order to ensure the 1970s-style reproductions were accurate.
