Transitions Optical has launched the world's first ophthalmic lens with variable polarisation.

The Vantage lens was unveiled to Optician at the Transitions plant in Tuam, Ireland last week ahead of the official launch at the Transitions 2012 Academy event in Florida on January 30.

Polarised lenses have traditionally relied on a single static coating to achieve their aim of reducing glare and reflections, but Transitions has brought variable polarisation and tinting to a clear lens for the very first time.

Polarisation on the new lens activates with light intensity, optimising the angle at which light hits the eye to control glare and light scatter. The lenses use a new type of photochromic dye, in which the molecules not only change shape to darken, but realign to create polarisation.
