Transitions Optical held a rooftop breakfast event at the Ham Yard Hotel in central London in order to highlight the role its adaptive lenses can play in regulating exposure to short wavelength blue light.
On show for the assembled fashion and industry journalists were Transitions Adaptive Lenses displayed in frames from companies including Lindberg, ic! Berlin, TD Tom Davies and Face à Face. The organisers were equal to the overcast conditions with UV torches to activate the lenses for a full demonstration.
Industry experts, including Professor John Marshall, were on hand to explain the benefits of the lenses.
‘We understand short wave length blue is potentially harmful and not really utilised for vision,’ said Prof Marshall. ‘At the same time we know from behavioural psychologists that we need long wavelength blue to ensure harmony in our circadian rhythms. So I think it is interesting that lens makers have the technology to filter out significant amounts of unhelpful shortwave blue and transmit the helpful longwave blue.
‘I think it is a good idea to get rid of this light you don’t need or use. So if you wear spectacles it is good to cut these short wavelengths with adaptive lenses.’
