The Eyecare Trust and Rubicon Exotic Juice Drinks have launched the Save Our Sight (SOS) initiative to collect unwanted sunglasses in recycling bins through optical practices across the UK.
All sunglasses will be checked for adequate UV protection, before being dispensed by The Asian Foundation for Help in free eye camps across India.
A media campaign, including adverts in The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Hello!, will run until October 31. The campaign will also raise awareness of the importance of vision protection in the UK, especially during what Rubicon and the Eyecare Trust believe will be an Indian summer.
Trust chairman Ian Anderson said: 'We hope to make a real difference to thousands of people in the developing world.'
