National Eye Week (November 9-15) was launched on Monday with a radio broadcast featuring optometrist Rosie Gavzey and celebrity ambassador David Dickinson, who completed 18 interviews with radio stations across the UK.

The objective was to highlight the impact of lifestyle on eye health and the importance of regular eye examinations and ways of making regular eye care affordable.

A pre-recorded item was subscribed to by an additional 35 stations, while a live web television show went out on Monday and was also syndicated to websites providing streaming.

A survey on computer vision testing, revealing that over two-fifths (43 per cent) of computer users were unaware their employer could help them with costs towards eye care, also enjoyed good uptake.

Commissioned by The Eyecare Trust and sponsor Simplyhealth, the findings highlighted the need for employers to communicate effectively the support available for employees to help look after their eye health.

The research also showed that the people least likely to know they are entitled to a sight test are those entering the workplace for the first time, 16-24 year-olds (58 per cent). Those most likely to know their entitlements are in the 25-34 year-old age group, with only 35 per cent unaware.
