hansfordThe BBC's One Show highlighted the importance of regular eye examinations and explained how optometrists can detect other wider health conditions such brain tumours, diabetes and high cholesterol, which may otherwise go undiscovered.

Presenter Lucy Siegle had her eyes tested by optometrist and former AOP chairman Lynn Hansford at her practice in Caerphilly.

The presenter pointed out to viewers the drawbacks of opting for cheap over the counter ready-readers which can cost as little as £5 against a visit to an optician.

Hansford added: 'The problem with off the shelf spectacles is that you don't get an eye test and it is really important that everybody from the age of three years to 93 years has a regular eye examination because then you know that your eyes are healthy and that there is nothing sneaky going on with your eyes that you are not aware off.'
