An Uber driver has been given a five-month suspended prison sentence and 240 hours of community service after exploiting a blind singer to award himself a five-star rating and £20 tip.
The Evening Standard reports that 32-year-old Cornel Mihai took advantage of Victoria Oruwari by persuading her to hand over her phone so that he could end the journey.
Oruwari later realised that the driver had added a tip to the journey fee and given himself the top rating on the app. Uber refunded the fare and reported Mihai to the police.
Mihai was convicted of fraud by false representation following a trial at Croydon magistrates court and has been stripped of his minicab licence, plus banned from driving for the next six months.
