German optical giant Fielmann has stated again it is aiming to enter the British high street.optician has previously reported that the optical retailer is planning a way into the UK profession, (News, July 27 2001). But in the past no board member has so openly stated the groupÕs intentions until now.In the latest annual report published this week, chairman and founder Gunther Fielmann stated that Britain, Spain and northern Italy are key areas for growth for the acquisitive group.ÔWe forecast growth prospects for existing outlets and in new markets,Õ he said. ÔOur shares of the markets in Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands are increasing sharply. We foresee prospects in Spain, northern Italy and Britain, and we treat the expansion of our network of branches into foreign markets as a challenge.ÕThe convergence of markets on the continent and the expansion of the euro currency are helping the German business in its plans to expand.Mr Fielmann stated that the companyÕs success outside Germany Ð there are nearly 40 Fielmann outlets in Poland Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands Ð is based on guaranteed low prices for consumers. The company has committed itself to become the market leader in most European countries and aims to have a 30 per cent market share of retail optics in Europe.
