Vision 2005 is billed as the world's premier event on sight loss and low vision and is held every three years.
It is due to arrive in London in 18 months' time following its staging in Sweden last year (News, July 5 2002) and will take place at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre opposite the House of Commons from April 4-8, 2005. Senior government ministers are expected to attend at least one of the five days.
The event is being organised by the International Society for Low-Vision Research & Rehabilitation, and will be hosted by the Royal National Institute for the Blind. As well as a call for papers Vision 2005 has outlined the conference themes, released the names of eight keynote speakers and put forward sponsorship opportunities.
Themes include:
Clinical care and rehabilitation
Epidemiology and world blindness
Visual function assessment and visual performance
Education across the lifespan
Advances in technology, designing and constructing for an inclusive environment
Employment.
Further details are available at www.rnib.org/vision2005.
Among the confirmed speakers is Professor Allen Foster, director of the International Centre for Eye Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.
Previously at the Institute of Ophthalmology, Professor Foster's major research interests are childhood blindness, evaluation of cataract services and control of blinding ocular infections.
Sponsorship opportunities range from the conference party at the Science Museum and a separate VIP trip on the London Eye (£7,000 each), to branding of the stationery to be used by delegates.
