VISION 2020 UK has launched a competition asking young children to submit a design, photograph or written description of a creatively-modified low vision device.

Its ‘Bigger, Better Vision’ competition, supported by Visually Impaired Children Taking Action, called on entrants to consider how devices can be adapted to make them more attractive to use.

Mary Bairstow, chair of the VISION 2020 UK children’s low vision sub group, said: ‘With our Bigger, Better Vision competition, we hope to highlight the lack of low vision equipment that is tailored for children, with devices traditionally aimed at an older generation.

‘Young people often reject visual aids, because they stand out and make them look different, leading to feelings of social exclusion. Young people want their low vision aids to be designed for them, in the way that many other products are, with choices that reflect their individuality and identity.’
