Vision driving warnings being ignored

37% of UK optometrists see patients who continue to drive despite low vision

Almost two in five (37%) optometrists in the UK have seen patients in the last month who, despite being told to stop because of their low vision, continue to drive.

This was discovered by the Association of Optometrists (AOP) during its most recent Voice of Optometry survey, which also revealed that there has been a 2% increase in the number of motorists being asked to stop driving because they pose a risk on the roads.

AOP is encouraging optical professionals to support its campaign, entitled ‘Don’t swerve a sight test’, which calls for legislative changes that would require all UK drivers to have a comprehensive vision test when first applying for a driving licence and every 10 years after.

Practitioners can support change by sharing material available at www.aop.org.uk/dontswerve.
