Two optical charities are looking for volunteer recruits for projects in Belize. The BCVI (Belize Council for the Visually Impaired) and VSO are looking for optical practitioners to assist them.
The BCVI has been working in the country for more than 20 years. The organisation started life as a committee of the Red Cross and is now an NGO, with a multi-disciplinary team of 25 members serving the whole country. It runs an annual summer camp which brings together the countryÕs visually-impaired children aged 6-16 years for a fortnight of educational and recreational activities.
As part of Vision 2020: Right to SightÕs global campaign to reduce blindness, BCVI in association with the Government of Belize and the Lions Club, embarked on a secondary eye care service to eliminate cataract as the main cause of blindness.
