Parents have been warned about the dangers toddlers face of chemical burns from liquitab detergents after a group of doctors at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow described them as a 'significant public health issue'.
In a letter to the Archive of Diseases in Childhood, they called for improved safety warnings and childproof packaging, having seen five children who had suffered chemical burns to their eyes or throats from either squeezing or biting the colourful liquitabs.
Dr Lyndsay Fraser, from the hospital's ear nose and throat unit, said: 'We have known for some time about the risk of eye injuries from kids squeezing these liquitabs until they burst. What we have seen more recently is that children are biting into the tablets, presumably because they think they are sweets as they have the same soft texture and bright colouring.'
