Senior eye doctors have warned parents to keep liquid detergent capsules out of the reach of young children after a surge in chemical injuries at The Western Eye Hospital, London.

In a letter to the British Medical Journal (March 2), Rashmi Mathew, specialist registrar in ophthalmology, and Melanie Corbett, consultant ophthalmologist from the hospital, said that last year chemical injuries associated with these capsules accounted for 40 per cent of ocular chemical injuries in children under the age of five.

Children are attracted by the colourful and malleable nature of the capsules, but their outer wall dissolves when in contact with moist hands or the mouth, releasing harmful, alkaline contents.
