WCSM awards medal to Prof James Fujimoto

Professor James Fujimoto was presented with the Gold Medal for Innovation by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers’ (WCSM) for his invention of optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Prof Fujimoto, a researcher at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), pioneered OCT which generates real-time, high-resolution three-dimensional images of the retina and optic nerve.

Prof Chris Hammond shared: ‘We are proud to recognise Prof Fujimoto’s exceptional achievements and his dedication to improving healthcare through innovation.’

Michael Harris, master of the WCSM, added that Fujimoto’s work had transformed ocular imaging for eye care professionals across the globe, and enabled speedy diagnosis and treatment, improving vision for all.
